E. coli is a bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded animals. Most E. coli strains are harmless. Mostly it helps people to stay healthy but some strains can cause serious food poisoning in humans . E. coli has been associated with a number of serious outbreaks, some of which have been fatal.
Case Study: Food Poisoning - E.coli 0157
A butcher’s shop in Wishaw was linked to the most serious E.coli outbreak in the UK. Dr Lisa Ackerley was asked by the butcher to help. She worked with the authorities to ensure that the premises were fit to re-open, helped to develop their HACCP, re-trained staff and provided reports for the defence; she was also called as a Crown witness in the Fatal Accident Inquiry.
